Expedition Rangers Advancement Trail

Expedition Rangers Handbook
Visit the Ranger Store to order your Expedition Ranger supplies and resources online!

The focus of the Advancement Trail is to help boys develop into young men who have the skills to make good sound decisions, who have strong moral character, who exemplify leadership skills, and most important, who are founded in the Word of God.

Air/Sea/Trail/High Action Rangers are part of the Expedition Rangers program offered to Rangers who are in grades nine through twelve. Other special-interest groups can be developed under the Expedition Rangers program to offer new skills and opportunities. These special-interest groups should submit their ideas to the national office for consideration and adoption.

A Royal Ranger in grades nine through twelve can earn any of the medals in the Expedition Rangers program. Although there are variety of uniform options in Expedition Rangers, the khaki Royal Rangers uniform is required to participate in the Ranger of the Year program. Expedition Rangers may participate in more than one Expedition Rangers program. All uniforms should have the Expedition Rangers name tag.

The advancement levels offered are merit-driven. To complete each advancement level—Questor, Adventurer, Voyager, Discoverer, Navigator, and Achievement Medal—each Ranger must earn the required merits and complete the required number of Spirit Challenge lessons.

The Expedition Rangers Handbook features a chart designed to lead each Ranger along the Advancement Trail.

How The Trail Works
There are more than one hundred silver merits available for Expedition Rangers. Many of these merits are included in the Expedition Rangers Workbook where the requirements are explained for those merits. The requirements for the remaining are found in the specific manuals for the Air, Sea, Trail, and High Action Rangers. However, the Expedition Ranger should consult a commander should be done before earning and applying ane merit toward the Achievement Medal. Patches or certificates and advancement pins are earned upon successful completion of requirements (depending on merit). The patches and pins may be worn on any of the Expedition Rangers uniforms.

Expedition, Adventure, and Discovery Rangers can earn silver merits. However, a merit may be used to satisfy the requirements for only one medal. If the Ranger earned the Auto Mechanics merit as an optional merit for the his Gold Medal of Achievement (GMA), then it will NOT apply to his Achievement Medal in Expedition Rangers. If he earned the Introduction to Airplanes Merit as an Adventure Ranger, he should not use it as an additional merit for the GMA because it is a required merit for the Expedition Air Rangers program.

Steps on the Advancement Trail
The Expedition Rangers Advancement trail contains six advancement levels following the recruit status. To advance to the next level, a Ranger should earn the required merits and complete the required number of Spirit Challenge lessons. To earn the Achievement Medal, he should earn twelve required merits and three additional merits (listed in the Merits section of the Expedition Rangers Handbook), plus complete any seventy-five Spirit Challenge lessons. The Ranger should use the charts at the end of the Expedition Rangers Handbook to track the names of the silver merits and the number of Spirit Challenges he has completed.
