BGMC 2007-2009 Biennial Report
Boys and
Girls Missionary Challenge celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2009,
with the inception of BGMC in 1949. Since its meager beginnings, BGMC has
become the Fellowship's missions program for children and has generated over 92
million dollars.
"As a child, I was introduced to BGMC and eagerly looked forward to filling my wooden Buddy Barrel so I could support missions," says George Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies. "The boys and girls of the Assemblies of God have powerfully advanced the work of the Lord through giving multiplied millions of dollars for 60 years through BGMC! So, Happy 60th Anniversary to BGMC! Thanks be to God!"
BGMC has seen a 90 percent growth over the past 10 years, with 94 percent of our districts experiencing an increased in giving and church involvement.
For the first time in history, BGMC has set a national BGMC giving goal: to raise $6 million during our anniversary year of 2009. For the past several years, BGMC has continued to see an increase in annual giving from local churches of over $5.7 million per year. If BGMC reaches its $6 million goal, David Boyd, national BGMC director, will accept his challenge to district leaders to do a Polar Bear Plunge into the icy waters of Table Rock Lake in Branson Missouri. The plunge will take place during the February 2010 district directors gathering.
Along with this challenge, Alton Garrison, assistant general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, said he would also do the Polar Bear Plunge if BGMC reaches $7 million. To make this even more interesting, Doug Clay, general treasurer of the Assemblies of God, said that if Alton jumps in, he will also.
In additional to financial growth, BGMC has gained many new resources, especially during the past two years. The national office team recreated the Web site for leaders to make it more informative and user friendly. In the fall of 2008, BGMC launched a Web site just for kids-a missions Web site that is the first of its kind for the General Council of the Assemblies of God.
BGMCKids is a powerful teaching tool that can be used at home and in churches with Internet access. It's colorful. It's full of graphics. It offers online and downloadable games. It has information and stories from kids and missionaries around the world. And it's full of resources that challenge kids to grow spiritually and to get more involved in missions. The goal of the Web site is to challenge kids to "Pray, Give, Go. Click here for further information.
BGMC introduced yet another powerful Web presence in 2008: E-LIFE. E-LIFE is a new school evangelism focus that challenges kids to be missionaries to their schools and communities. Downloadable lessons, videos, coaching tools, and more are online free for leaders. The lessons were designed so that any children's leader-kids' church, Girls Ministries, Royal Rangers, and Sunday School-could easily implement the 5-minute applications within their existing programs. Click here for further information.
BGMC's new online store, thanks to the assistance of General Council's Web masters and Gospel Publishing House, now provide dozens of products and resources, all of which are designed to maximize the local children's leaders' ability to involve kids in missions. The Around the World missions manual, now on CD, provides hours of educational materials that leaders can use monthly to emphasis BGMC on Sundays or mid-week.
