"Power Plant" Kids Turn Wheels into Missions Dollars
By Kelly Presson, children's pastor, Christian Celebration Center
The second annual BGMC Bike-a-Thon held May 31, 2009, in Midland, Michigan, raised over $2000 as 22 children participated in the event. This year the Power Plant kids, under the leadership of children's pastor Kelly Presson, learned how a little money goes a long way in some other countries.
The Power Plant kids from Christian Celebration Center wanted to raise funds to help the Family Circus Ministries in Davao, Philippines. (Family Circus Ministries helps thousands of needy kids in Davao each week and is coordinated by missionaries Darrell and Sandy Blatchley.) Each kid who participated was also inspired by the bounty that would be offered at the BGMC Bike-a-Thon, which included four levels of prizes:
- For raising $50: A swim party for participants.
- For raising $75: A swim party plus a BGMC Bike-a-Thon T-shirt.
- For raising $100: A swim party, the T-shirt, and a Tiger Woods' mini golf outing.
- For raising $250: A swim party, the T-shirt, the Tiger Woods' mini golf outing, and a slumber party at Pastor Kelly's.
Not to be overshadowed by fabulous prizes, this year's special guest at the BGMC Bike-a-Thon was the owner of Trike World of Midland, who brought several models of Trikes for participants to try out while completing their pledge.
The Trikes were a huge hit with both kids and adults (the adults preferred the motorized Trikes). After two hours of biking, the kids were provided hotdogs and chips while sitting in groups as they fellowshipped together.
The 2009 BGMC Bike-a-Thon was a huge success because the heart of Power Plant kids at CCC beats for missions.
