Long-Term Investment Strategies in a Turbulent Market

Changes in the financial world happen at a breakneck pace these days, and with them come roller coaster stock market rides.

Bear markets that used to last for months and even years work their way through the market in a matter of days or weeks.

Prophetic voices are heard declaring the coming stock and bond market collapse. As an investor or retiree, you may be asking yourself, "Which way can I turn?" Rather than turning to the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, or Money Magazine, we can find valuable insight in the Word of God in turbulent times like this.

In Matthew 6:19, Christ challenges us not to lay up for ourselves treasures on earth but treasures in heaven. Many consider this scripture a statement regarding sacrificial giving. However, a thorough look at the implications of this text clearly shows that this challenge has less to do with sacrificial giving and more about making sound investments. Christ was the ultimate long-term investment advisor.

The reality is that our investments on this earth will be eaten by moths, corrupted by rust, or stolen. Certainly we will not take them with us. However, our long-term investments in kingdom purposes will provide the ultimate retirement plan.

After twenty years of providing planned giving, estate planning, and tax services across the country, I can share unequivocally that I have never met a believer who was worried about what he or she gave away. On the other hand, I have met believers who, everyday, are worried about what they are trying to keep.

Consider Christ's long-term investment strategy as a critical element of your investment and estate planning. It will reduce volatility in your investment portfolio and provide wonderful returns, both now and in eternity.
