Look out for the Flu Bug!

Flu season is here and unlike other years many of us will not be able to receive the Flu Shot We are now faced with the challenge of staying healthy There are some things we can do that will lessen our chances of getting the flu this year.

Flu Facts

  • Flu is a viral infection
  • There is no cure for flu; it just has to run its course.
  • Flu is spread through personal contact and contact with the droplets released into the air by coughing and sneezing.
  • Flu can make people of any age ill.
  • Most people are sick for only a few days, but some develop serious illness which may require hospitalization.

Symptoms of Flu

  • Sudden onset of high fever usually over 101 degrees
  • Dry cough
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Weakness
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Red watery eyes that are sensitive to light

What can we do to avoid the spread of flu?

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Put your used tissue in the waste basket
  • Wash your hands after sneezing and coughing
  • Stay away from large crowds of people
  • Eat a health diet rich in vitamins and minerals
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Wash your hands frequently

What to do if you think you have the flu.

  • Check your temperature if you are feeling ill.
  • If you have a fever and other symptoms of the flu contact your personal physician and discuss with him if you a candidate for one of anti viral medicines used to treat flu. Taken early these medications may less the duration and intensity of the symptoms.
  • If you have a fever greater than 100.6 degrees you should stay home to avoid spreading the flu to your coworkers.
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of fluids

Without the availability of flu vaccine this year we just need to be very careful to do our best to stay healthy. Hopefully next year we will have the vaccine available again.
