Practical Living

Power of Senior Faith

Senior adults are in a position to have a great influence upon those who are younger.  They are coming from a lifelong history of faith and experience.  I like to call it “senior influence” or “senior faith.”

Miriam

The Granny Brigade returned to South Africa in May 2007.  At the JFK airport for my flight to South Africa, I remembered the words God whispered in my ear just a few short years before:  “A vision without action is just a dream!”  In South Africa we traveled to schools in the city of Mokopane to share our testimonies, dramas, and the plan of salvation.  As each child received the Book of Hope, a Hope Bracelet was placed on them by grandmothers who lovingly looked into their eyes and told them, “Jesus loves you.”  To personally give God’s powerful Word to children is pure joy!

Profiles of Faith

William J. Lambertson grew up in a rural Kansas town where his family attended the small Methodist church.  A gifted athlete, he also enjoyed music and became proficient in playing several instruments, especially the trumpet.

Favorite Hymns

Be Still My Soul - Katharina von Schlegel was the outstanding woman of the Pietistic Revival in Germany which occurred in the latter half of the seventeenth century.  In approximately 1852, the hymn was translated into English by Jane Borthwick.  The hymn tune is an arrangement of one movement from Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia.”

Finances

Maximizing Fixed Income Investments

In the world of investing, the concern for most individuals is market risk—the volatility (or risk) that comes from investing in equities.  To limit the risk often associated with the equity market, many individuals invest in an assortment of fixed income investments such as CDs, term notes, or bonds.  While this approach can reduce one’s exposure to market risk, it does open the door to a less-talked-about kind of risk—reinvestment risk.
