Five Circles of Commitment

The five levels (circles) of commitment illustrates the five different audiences or groups the church is working with in the people building process. Each person in the church is at one of these levels of commitment. An effective church learns to manage the spiritual development of people, designing ministry strategies that move people to the next inner circle of commitment.

This illustration is adapted from materials developed by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church for his book The Purpose Driven Church, Growth Without Compromising Your Message & Mission, and is used by permission of Zondervan Publishing House.

The rate of spiritual development and one's level of commitment are different for each person. The church's challenge is to encourage a desire within people to continue on to a deeper, more meaningful commitment to Jesus Christ and the Church.

Note: As people develop spiritually there are points of resistance. This is normal and to be expected. In fact, resistance always precedes acceptance. If there is no resistance, there can be no acceptance. There is nothing to accept if there is no resistance. In this illustration, the blue lines of each circle represent a point of resistance an individual must overcome in order to continue developing as a disciple.
